Read The Letters From Maran

Understand who Maran was and how he touched so many so many lives

This letter is in regards to the ruling of “Who is a Jew”

Regarding the "Who is a Jew" law and Reform and Conservative 'converts', and regarding the custom of Syrian Jews sitting cross-legged in the synagogue

In the honor Rabbi HaMpur’ demands good for his people, Rabbi Avraham Hecht ( Shilita’a )

Rabbi of the Shaare Zion community Brooklyn, New York,

Greetings,

R.M.N.

I was happy to hear from the Rabbi Azirel Zelig Salonim (Shalita), director of the Chabad in Jerusalem, that the Rebbe (Shalita) met with our soul friend, the great genius, the Reverend Butsina Kadisha, son of saints, par And the tzaddik of the generation, the right-hand pillar, the great light for the government of the Torah, from the tzaddik of the many as slain and his exclusion from Israel. Reverend Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson (Shlit’a) the M’lubavitch Rebbe. and conveyed to him the gist of the things that came out of the meeting held between us, during his last visit to Israel regarding the conversion of the Reformers and the branching out.

And already in 2007, when I was serving as the chief rabbi of Tel Aviv-Yafo, the state was stirred up here regarding the definition of the law
“who is a Jew”, and I was in continuous contact with the Rabbinate Rebbe of Lubavitch (Shalit’a) and Chabad Chasidim.

And in particular with Rabbi Ephraim and Lef (Shalit’a) from the Chabad yeshiva, my loyal supporters, and I even held several emergency meetings with all the rabbis of Israel after the government’s ruling on this law.

And so on in the year 1974, when I was serving as Rishon Lezion, there was a coalition negotiation on the issue of “Who is a Jew”, and they offered
the religious sages a compromise, and I strongly opposed it. And even then I said that the proposal they offered was not going to lead to a solution. And at that time the Rebbe (Shilita) said to our friend Rabbi Rabbi Yosef bar Soloveitchik Shilita, and also to our friend Rabbi Rabbi Yaakov Katzin (Shilita) to tell me that it is necessary to arouse the rabbis and the judges about a matter This law needs to be changed and fixed from the ground up, and I did it out of pure desire and desire. Indeed, even then I sent letters to the leading rabbis in the United States with copies to the Rebbe (Shalit’a) and the aforementioned rabbis. Therefore, my opinion has not changed at all since then.

And since last night Rabbi Azriel Zelig Salonim (Shilitaa) and Rabbi Rabbi Moshe Weber ( Shilitaa) visited me, and told me that there is
still a voice in our streets about the statement of Rabbi Yitzhak Peretz Shalita the Minister of the Interior of Shas movement regarding the recognition of the reformers’ conversions, I will repeat again in writing what I already said to his honor at our face-to-face meeting, and I will be on my guard. In general, the Council of Torah Sages strongly opposes any act?? The emigration of a reformist or conservative congregation, and their every act of emigration is neither shririn nor kaimin. And I personally instructed the Minister of the Interior, so that he and the High Court order him to register Gentiles who were converted by Reform or Conservative conversion and not by the conversion agreed on behalf of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, that he retire from the government. without any negotiation. And Mani and Mania will collapse a great deal.

And regarding what the head of the “Gates of Zion” KK asked him to find out about the custom that has spread among Syrian Jews of
not sitting cross-legged in the synagogues, I will reply:

I asked our tzaddik friend Rabbi Avraham Raful (Shalit’a) about this rumor, and he replied that it is true and stable. This is how they practiced
in all the churches in Syria, and this is what he heard from his father. And he even brought the midrash Bilkot Shimoni in Deuteronomy (chapter no) on the way to Tzahot, that the Holy One, blessed be He, said to Moses before his soul departed to Genzi Marumim, put your feet on each other’s backs and put your feet on each other’s backs, etc., hence it is only when a person dies that his feet are placed It’s on its back. and Doc.

And without having anything to do with the custom in Syria, it is not respectful in the synagogue to sit cross-legged, which is the rude way, and whoever
does this should be reprimanded. And the same is true between men and women, and women in particular should not sit like this, because it is not the modesty of a daughter of Israel that if she sits like that, she causes her limbs to stand out, thereby causing an obstacle. And so I also heard from my friend the late Rabbi Yitzchak Abuchatzira, Rabbi of the city of Ramla, from where the Rabbi Yaakov Abuchatzira grew up . and ACM.

And the Shi’at will fence the gaps of Israel, and he will be blessed as the ruler of the Torah with all the blessings of the Torah, in sound health, wealth and honor,
long days and years of good and pleasant life, and his springs will be spread across to increase the Torah and magnify it, in sound health and commanded from above, until old age and return to the abundance of goodness and all He who does will succeed.

Sincerely,

Ovadia Yosef
